An article critique is the professional analysis of the chosen article about literature or science concerning the informative value of the text and the author’s ability to present his arguments and evidence in the proper way. Very often students fail to complete a quality article critique, because of the lack of experience and professor’s instructions, so one is able to learn how to write the article critique correctly with the help of the well-designed guidelines.

Step One: Read the Article Attentively

Naturally, the very first step in the process of writing of the successful article critique is the attentive reading of the article in order to understand it in general. Obviously, the student should read the scientific text carefully in order to understand it and recognize all the key points and issues, which have been observed there. It is quite useful to take notes scrupulously while reading the text in order to avoid missing the important parts and the problems mentioned in the article. Moreover, when one marks the phrases or sentences in the article or writes them down into the notebook, he will already have the required evidence and arguments, which will support his point of view later.

Step Two: Read the Text Once More and Point the Core Problems out

The second attempt to read the article should be a more scrupulous one, because the student will need to analyze the structure of the text, the style of the author’s presentation, the author’s persuasive skills, the author’s thesis, etc. The student is supposed to define whether the author has the main hypothesis or the thesis statement, which becomes the heart of the whole text. If there is such a sentence, the young person should observe whether the author builds his narration and observation of the problem around this thesis. Next, the student should evaluate the quality of the author’s argumentation – if the author chooses the quality evidence, which can convince the audience in his point of view. Furthermore, one should think about the type of the audience the text is addressed to and should define whether the information delivered in the text suits to the age or the educational level of the audience. Finally, the student will need to analyze whether there are any holes in the author’s hypothesis and argumentation (for example, dubious weak out-of-date facts and sources, etc).

Step Three: Check the Writer’s Citation

When one reads the scientific article, he must not believe to all the facts mentioned there. The student who is writing a quality article critique should check what sources the author has used for the research and whether he has cited all the sources well. Sometimes it happens that even the experienced scholars use the out-of-date poor-quality sources, which reduce the quality of the article.

Step Four: Construct the Paper Logically

Having observed the article from all possible sides one should organize the critique professionally. The student should start from the introduction mentioning the author, the article’s title, its size and year of publication. The following paragraphs of the critique should cover the information presented in the text of the article in the chronological way in order avoid missing any wise idea or the author’s concept. The student should insert his ideas and suggestions all the time demonstrating to the professor his understanding of the matter and supporting his thoughts with the right arguments. Finally, one should summarize the content of the article and evaluate its usefulness objectively.
